Can Color Changing BMW Revolutionize Car Paint industry?!

Bmw has brought their electric suv prototype IX flow into CES 2022 which can change it’s color and show different patterns on a car with a push of a button. The bmw ebbed and it’s flows different color like it was breathing and made entirely customizable car surface where you can put any thing on your car.

Bmw vision is to revolutionize traditional paint industry and change your car color with a help of a button. This car uses electrophoretic technology by this car can change its color immediately. How this technology works? This car has different color pigment into its paint by electric current that brings different color pigment to the surface.

They take old technology and make it amazing. This technology was invented in 1970 by Xerox engineers they had an idea of making low power display that can be used for reading like a digital news paper but back then it’s was to complicated for the engineer’s to make this possible. But after 20 years Barrett Comiskey Joseph Jacobson and Jd Albert they made progress on Xerox project and made a electronic paper display a reality. But at that it was still complicated because they were in 90’s but they didn’t give up and continued their progress and made a electronic display that you can hold into your hand. They registered their patent and E Ink was formed.

Back in 80’s they had an idea to make E ink but they don’t have a technology at that to made this possible but in 90’s they made microcapsules that are the size of a human hairs and they filled them with black and white particles when electricity flows through them different color would appear on the exterior of the car. Black particles has positive charge and white particles are negatively charged. They covered whole body of a car with these particles and cover them with a sheet when positive charge is applied to the body and black color appears on the body and if they use negative charge white color move on the top of the surface. In this display they don’t need any back light they have ambient light from the environment. One of E ink advantage is energy efficient and same goes for bmw they layed that film on the exterior of the car. It was very difficult for bmw because you can’t lay 3d imagine on the flat surface they have to create a new algorithm for the bmw to display images and change color.

The main benefit Is more then customizing your car, On hot sunny day you can change your car color to white so it can lower the consumption of your cooling system and in cold day you can make you car black so it can absorb more heat from the outer surface.

Instead of small turn signal you can make your whole car blink when you want to merge into different line. This is the whole idea that you can put anything that you can imagine on your car. It is only limited by your imagination.

But it has downside Eink is very fragile and scratch and any hit can cost you a lot of money to fix that’s why it’s a concept car. But they are figuring out to make it more reliable and cost effective as possible. It would take long we can see this concept on the road.
